FAQs
An online lawyer consultation is a scheduled conversation, by phone, video or chat, between a person with a legal issue and an advocate enrolled with a State Bar Council, held remotely. The advocate reviews the facts and documents shared, explains the applicable law and options, and suggests next steps such as a notice, a reply, a filing or representation. It is advice, not court representation.
Is Online Legal Consultation Valid In India?
No Indian law restricts where or how a client consults an advocate, and advice from an enrolled advocate is professional advice in any medium. Courts themselves permit e-filing and video-conference hearings. Representation still requires a formal engagement and a vakalatnama. On Zolvit, consultations are provided by independent advocates; Zolvit facilitates the connection and the booking.
An online consultation helps you understand your legal situation, explore your options and make a more informed decision with professional guidance.
A lawyer can help you understand the risks, options, and next steps.

How To Verify An Advocate's Enrolment Yourself
Every practising advocate holds an enrolment number issued by a State Bar Council, though the format varies by state. You can ask the advocate for this number and check it against the roll published by that State Bar Council. The Bar Council of India's certificate-and-place-of-practice verification framework applies to all advocates.
If you have no documents yet
A timeline and the names of the parties involved are enough to start. The advocate will tell you what to collect from there.
What A Single Consultation Cannot Settle
No definitive outcome is promised from a single consultation.
Consultation → advice and next-step summary → your decision → documentation, legal notice or reply → negotiation or settlement → filing before a court, tribunal or commission, if needed → representation.
Many matters end at the notice, reply or settlement stage, without going further.

Business decisions often come with legal risks. Consult a lawyer online for guidance on contracts, employment, compliance, disputes and other business matters.
How a business consultation differs
A business consultation typically involves scope notes, retainer options, NDAs where needed, and often several stakeholders on the call. For some matters, a Chartered Accountant or Company Secretary is the more relevant professional, where applicable.
NRIs can consult advocates in India online for property, inheritance, family and documentation matters.
Practicalities for clients outside India
NRIs can consult lawyers online across time zones. If a Power of Attorney is executed abroad, attestation or apostille and registration requirements may apply before it can be used in India. FEMA rules may also apply to certain property transactions.
Online lawyer consultation fees in India vary based on the lawyer, consultation duration, legal complexity and services required.
What the consultation fee covers
The scheduled legal consultation
Advice provided during the consultation
Not usually included: court fees, stamp duty, drafting, representation and other additional services, unless specifically stated.
GST, where applicable. Legal services from an advocate to a business entity are generally taxed under reverse charge; services to an individual are generally exempt.
Are contingency fees allowed in India?
No. Advocates cannot make their fees dependent on the outcome of a case or agree to share litigation proceeds under Rule 20 of the Bar Council of India Rules. The Supreme Court reaffirmed this in B. Sunitha v. State of Telangana (2017).
